About your therapist
Christine Gibson, B.Sc. (P.T.), M.C.P.A, M.O.P.P.Q, Diploma of advanced manipulative therapy, has been practicing physiotherapy for 14 years. She specializes primarily in manual therapy as well as incorporating an active approach to rehabilitation through therapeutic exercise programs. She has diplomas from the Canadian Academy of Manipulative Therapists. She has taught manual therapy in the undergraduate physiotherapy program at McGill University and continues to teach this method to other physiotherapists.
Manual Therapy
Manual therapy is a systematic method for evaluating and treating musculoskeletal problems. The goal of manual therapy is to decrease pain and improve function by:
- Increasing joint mobility and muscle flexibility.
- Strengthening weak muscles.
- Ensuring the patient understands the condition to prevent re-occurrences.
- Guiding safe return to sports and activities.
Methods used:
- Joint mobilization and manipulation.
- Therapeutic exercises.
- Education on self-management.
- Postural and ergonomic correction.
- Preventative taping.
- Modalities for muscle re-education and reduction of swelling.
Who can benefit from manual therapy treatments?
Most people with musculoskeletal problems benefit from this form of treatment. Whether the problem is work-related, such as prolonged computer use, or due to sports and leisure activities.
Acute injuries such as ankle sprains, and chronic overuse conditions are also commonly treated by manual therapists.
